New slalom gate for kayak races 

Winner of ICF Slalom gate Design Competition

 

The main aim of our project is to make touches to the gate poles in canoe slalom more clearly and readily visible, both to spectators at the event and to television audiences. The immediacy of the notification and the objectivity of the touch are also key features of our design.

 

Therefore illuminating the pole from top to bottom by lighting it from the inside was the clearest and most effective way of signalling penalty touches.

Before any touches, the pole, made of translucent material, has exactly the same appearance as the present one, but once touched it is illuminated from the inside thanks to strips of LED. Orange LEDs of sufficient power would allow 360-degree visibility in all conditions over a considerable distance.
