VENUE ON THE GREEN

Venue on the Green

Venue on the Green is a new Youth Centre in Forest Row, East Sussex.

The building features a thin timber Hyperbolic Paraboloid roof shell made of 2 layers of 33mm thick Kerto-Q LVL panels. The supporting structure is a glulam timber frame with RC foundations.

The HP shell is a very simple yet structurally efficient shape, that combines a tension catenary and a compression arch load path to resist vertical loads. However, this comes at the price of very high horizontal thrusts at the 2 low corners of the shell.

Working for Corbett & Tasker structural engineers, my main tasks included the detail design of the 2 steel bracing brackets and all timber to timber connections. This has been carried out through hand sketches, CAD drawings and localized FEM models for the steel brackets.
