The Rising Sun 

Erected for the 2018 Tall Ship Race, Liverpool

 

 

In Summer 2018 Corbett & Tasker were commissioned to work on the Rising Sun to design a lightweight steel frame which could be easily transported using a Luton van and erected without the need for a crane or foundations. This was achieved using an adaptation of the traditional ‘barn-raising’ technique and a ‘block and tackle’ to winch the hinged frame into place, with site bolted connections to ensure the frame could be flat packed between each use. 

 

Working for Corbett and Tasker structural engineers, my tasks included the structural analysis of the steel frame, equilibrium checks, connection design, liaising with steel fabricator and lead artist to ensure that transportability and constructability requirements were met. Also, I provided additional support on site working alongside the lead artist and the production designer for assembling and erection.
